Do a backup.

I’ve never had technology randomly break on me. Unless you count that one time I dropped my phone on the pavement—its screen cracked, of course. It still worked.

Technology is my best friend. We understand each other. We help each other. So, imagine my surprise when my Mac screen turned black. I fully expected it to turn back on when I pressed the power button.

It didn’t.

This happened around a week ago. I had scheduled an appointment with Genius Bar today, and it (thankfully!) turned out it to be a software issue, since an image restore made it work again.

I didn’t have any Time Machine backups—I only used iCloud sync with Documents and Desktop, as well as Dropbox for Scrivener. Everything is still there, but I guess this taught me to always do a backup, because setting up applications and settings again are a major pain and time sink. But I’ve never been more grateful my current writing stuff is backed up in Dropbox, because for a little while, I wasn’t sure if those iCloud files would carry over.

So this is a reminder, too, in case you haven’t:

Shit happens. Always do a backup.
